YFT 2016 Spring Get Together Dinner

The Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver co-hosted an annual get-together Dinner for the officers and spouses before the arrival of the traditional Chinese Spring Festival.

This year the get-together dinner was held once more at the King's Chinese Cuisine Restaurant on Main Street, on Tuesday, January 12th.

Dinner started around 6:30. Everybody was happy socializing with each other.

Chairman Kan Yu was very kind coming to each table to welcome us.

The food was very good this year especially the chicken and the crab & lobster dish. We all got very good appetite. After the very delicious tapioca pudding we all said we wanted the red bean soup offered to us.

We greet each other for a happy year of monkey on our way out.

Esther Yue

Chinese Society Legacy Program Presentations

City of Vancouver Planning staff members Helen Ma and Bonnie Ma presented an update on the Vancouver Chinatown Society Legacy Program, a proposed $36 million rehabilitation of 12 Chinese Societies heritage buildings, at our April 9th monthly board meeting.

The presentation include an overview of the program and the proposed implementation plan to our board members, they also handed out a bi-lingual program brochure to us for our reference.

Vancouver City Council recently approved $3.6 million to kick start the program.

"The Legacy program provides an opportunity to anchor change in Vancouver Chinatown and create a lasting cultural legacy that our city, province and nation can be proud of for generations to come."

The twelve Society - owned buildings are over 100 years old and in need of major building upgrades. Maintaining and upgrading these heritage buildings is a significant challenge for the Societies. Without a sustainable, long - term plan to renew the buildings and their operations, the buildings will soon reach a point where they will be unsafe and uninhabitable and their legacies will be lost forever.

This report describes the Chinese Society Legacy Program including a magnitude of cost for the rehabilitation of the Society buildings and a fundraising and partnership strategy to approach senior levels of government and other potential funding partners.

Diamond Couple Celebrate 60th Wedding Anniversary

A Yee couple had cause to celebrate recently on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Dick and Georgina Yee, who marked their Diamond Wedding on Saturday, June 11, at the YFT Society Hall.  Attended by many family members, Mah cousins, close friends and Yee members.

The couple, who have three children, a son and two daughters, are all married with offspring of their own.

Advisor Dick and Georgina Yee are as much in love today as they were when they were teenagers.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the YFT Society, I would like to congratulate them on this happy occasion and wish them a very happy and healthy life together.

Happy 60th anniversary to you both! This is what dedication and marriage should be. You work for your relationship through thick and thin and stand by your spouse.

Photos below were taken at their Golden Anniversary celebration in 2006 and cruising with the family and grand kids. Photos courtesy of Dick and Georgina Yee.

Vancouver's Yees and Mahs - 2016 Day Trip

David Ma had suggested back in March we resume the summer day trip tradition the Yee and Mah Societies used to co-organize every year until 2011.

So after much planning we decided to repeat a favorite destination - Harrison Hot Springs on Sunday August 14, 2016.

En-route we made a stop at Bridal Falls before arriving at Harrison at 11:10. We took a group photo with our back to the lake.

There were 14 from the Yee Fung Toy, and about 20 each from the Mah Society and the Kin Fung Athletics Club.

Then it is lunch at the Black Forest Restaurant serving German cuisine where the Pock Hock entree at $19.95, the house specialty, was served to those who had pre-ordered. It was a large order of food so Betty wisely asked for it to shared between the two of us.

The server came back with the meat cut in two, plus an empty plate. We barely finished all the food.

After lunch we walked by the Harrison Hotel and on to the spring source, from where the Hotel and later the public pools get their hot spring water. Before returning to the bus at 2 pm, we walked along the shore to the man made lagoon.

On the way back to Vancouver, we stopped for us to buy non-GMO Chilliwack corn at $8.50 for 12, then another stop to taste and buy honey, and one more at Birchwood Farms for ice cream made on the premises where we saw the cows being herded for milking (viewing from 3 - 5 pm). It was a glorious day with few clouds but not too hot.

Everything went off smoothly, everyone stayed on time and the only thing that was not planned for was a road accident on the #1 Highway which we knew about and had to avoid with an interesting detour via 0th Avenue, barely on the Canadian side of the border.

We were only about 30 minutes late for our group dinner at the Happy Valley Restaurant in Vancouver on Lougheed near Rupert. After dinner everyone went home happy.

Vancouver YFT members attended The King of the Yees Performance

Richmond¡¦s Gateway Theatre presented the Canadian premiere of fast-rising American playwright Lauren Yee¡¦s cultural comedy "KING OF THE YEES" from October 13 to October 22. This play was directed by Sherry J. Yoon.

Fred Yee and I attended one of the performances on Friday, October 14th with other Yees from Vancouver.

If the words Yee Fung Toy the Model Ancestor and former State Senator Leland Yee mean something to you, then you will also really enjoy the play. If they do not you you will still enjoy it. It has so much to offer, I was laughing one moment and in tears the next.

Opening night was almost sold out, but I am sure there are tickets available on other nights until it closes on Oct 22. Congratulations Lauren and the cast!
