The Incredible Round-the-World Cyclist Liu Yik Ming

Liu pedaled into Houston from New Orleans, soaking wet, on a cold and rainy night, October 13, 2006. Annie, manager of Tan Do, his first restaurant of call on Bellaire China town, thought he was one of the vagrants begging for a free meal. What Liu told her about his round the world solo cycling mission¡Xpromoting goodwill of the 2008 Beijing Olympics and world peace, did not impress her. She, nevertheless, gave Liu a hot plate of charshiu rice and then sent him on his way. The rest, of course, was history. Liu, from Jianjang, is, indeed, a hero and his accomplishment rivals that of Lance Armstrong, another cyclist better known for his 7th consecutive Tour de France triumph.

The news about Liu soon spread and I decided to check out this Liu character at a briefing at the Chinese Civic Center. He received spontaneous support from the sparse audience, who promptly plopped down $3,000+ cash, on the spot. He said he would like to visit NASA and I volunteered to be his host. Consul Zhou Ding joined us for BBQ at Otto¡¦s, a local greasy-spoon, yet frequented by such dignitaries as the Bushes and Bakers. Liu insisted carrying his backpack wherever he went. I told him to leave it inside my car. He said he would not trust anybody ever since his tragic experience in Peru when he went inside a Chinese restaurant asking for directions. Upon coming out, his bike and belongings were gone. Notwithstanding that he was now in good hands (me, Frank) and in, no less, Houston, he preferred to lug his backpack throughout the entire NASA tour.

It rained cats and dogs on October 16th with partial flooding in the Clear Lake area. While driving and sitting out in my SUV to dodge flooded streets, I did have ample time to get more acquainted with Liu and learned more about his trip. Some of his adventures have already been published in the local Chinese newspapers.

Briefly, not in any chronological order, countries he cycled and camped out over the last 5 years included Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czech, Germany, Belgium, France, England, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Panama, Costs Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Cuba and USA. He then cycled from New York to Miami, Atlanta, and New Orleans before reaching Houston. From Houston, he cycled to Austin and then to Dallas. He is projected to pedal through Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and California, whence Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and definitely Taiwan before the 2008 Olympics. He would need to zigzag through country roads to avoid cycling on Interstate highways due to safety regulations.

I am touched by his sacrifice and accomplishments. It defies pain, endurance, and perseverance. I am particularly proud that a Chinese has done something worthy of Guineas World Record. Yee Fung Toy Association was among the very few clan associations that feted him. Wouldn't it be magnanimous had this ACOH meeting been scheduled earlier during his brief stopover so that we all could chip in to enable him to finish this remarkable journey?
