2007 Annual Picnic to Blackbeard's Cave

group at Blackbeard's Cave

The New York Yee Fong Toy Association held its annual picnic on July 14, 2007 at Blackbeard¡¦s Cave ¡V Family Recreation Center in Bayville, N.J. On this day, a winning combination for an amazing outing was in play. Essentials were a coordinator with a great team, an enthusiastic group of participants, the best weather one can get for a day in July and, most importantly, a great place to have fun. Although Blackbeard¡¦s Cave was a smaller amusement park, I felt it provided a more family-oriented atmosphere. As coordinator, I was leery about going to another amusement park year after year. Nevertheless to our surprise, almost all of the 200 tickets were sold out within the first two weeks of sale. We even had a few families willing to drive there just to be where the action was.

President Kenneth (standing)

The day began with the same enthusiasm with everyone arriving earlier than expected to board the four-chartered buses. I was grateful that more than half actually decided to take the offer of four hours of unlimited use of the activities at reduced group rates. For us, this was a record breaker. The group was ready for a day of fun even though we arrived late due to all the traffic. After everyone got their wristbands and box lunches, we took some group pictures. Then many decided to forego lunch and head straight for the activities.

What impressed me most about Blackbeard¡¦s Cave were the activities that required some level of skills of the participant as well as others. I enjoyed the time spent with Vice President Gong, Janet our youth league VP, John and others as we waited on line to use the ¼-mile Go-Carts track. One had to maneuver up bridges, tunnels and turns at the same time trying to out run your fellow Go-Cart drivers. I was also glad that some groups were not afraid of getting wet as they waited to use the water bumper boats equipped with water guns to shoot water at one another. Young and older kids/adults appear to have a great time. Likewise, some groups went to play the 20-hole mini golf, jousting, and catapulting water balloons at each other in water wars. Individual skills were needed for the wall climbing, Euro-Bungee trampoline, archery range, 350-yard driving range, batting cage and many other activities at the video arcades. For others, it was just a time to relax, enjoy the weather, sit and chat with one another. What counted most was at the end of the day we all had fun.

No place to hide at bumper boats

Way to go, May

This year, I want to thank President Kenneth for helping me take pictures and seeing to it that everyone was in good hands. In addition, everyone should pat himself or herself on the back for making this event so enjoyable. Everyone was so understanding, courteous to each other and on time when needed. Hope to see you all next year and to continue making my job so easy.

Sacramento Annual Picnic at William Land Park

2007 Annual Picnic, Yee Association of Sacramento, CA

The Sacramento YFT Annual Picnic at William Land Park on Sunday, July 15, 2007 was a success with a buffet lunch and fun in the sun!

Over 150 people came to enjoy the food, prizes and fun in the sun! Among those, 50 of them were children who enjoyed games and goodies. Also, there was a raffle drawing for prizes.

Everyone enjoyed the day's outing.

2007 Outing to Lake Compounce

On July 21st, our Association held our annual summer outing with a trip to Lake Compounce Theme Park in Bristol, Connecticut. It was a beautiful day with temperature in the 70¡¦s as family and friends gathered in the Association or at the corner of Hudson & Kneeland Streets eagerly awaiting the arrival of 2 buses for the 9 am departure.

Upon arriving at the park, we met up with many members who had arrived by driving their family auto. After gathering for a group picture in front of the entrance gate, it was time to enter the park for a day of fun and recreation. The park has a beautiful setting with a mountain background and a calm scenic lake for boat ride and swimming.

Most enjoyable was watching the youngsters play the enlarged and improved water park. Along with a beach area there were high tubes for water slide, pool for those who rather not swim at the beach area, a water gym where children can climb, swing, and run under buckets that turn over when full and dumps water on them.

Rides and amusements were numerous. There are kiddie rides for the very young and larger, higher rides for the older set. Route 66 Auditorium provided scheduled entertainment of musical shows for those who wish to sit back and relax.

It was also good the see that Advisor & Mrs Kwok Chi whose 2 sons ,one from New York, the other from Massachusetts, brought their families, as well as Advisor Peter who drove there to be with his family, allowing us to meet 3 generations of their families. Also Advisor & Mrs Winston who brought grandson wearing his Red Sox cap enjoying the rides and water park.

At 6 pm everyone got on the buses for the return trip to Boston. As we approach Chinatown, our V-P Ho Lee asked if everyone had a good time and it was a resounding yes. He then thanks our driver for a smooth safe trip, bid everyone good wishes and hope to see them next year.

YFT Association of Houston Summer Activity

The annual summer activity was held at the Incredible Pizza in Sugar Land on Sunday, July 22, 2007. Incredible Pizza is an indoor facility with all-you-can-eat buffet and fun with fairground attractions as Go-cart racing, bumper cars, mini-golf, bowling, rides and games for all ages. The stifling heat and humidity in Houston has never been ideal for outdoor picnic, not to mention the inclement weather and the mosquitoes.

Houston YFT Summer Activity 07

More than 90 Yee clans and friends, varying from 10-month to 90-year olds, showed up. They all gathered at the Stardust room for a hearty meal. Game cards were then issued free to all attendees. Some older members elected to reminisce the good old times. The younger and able bodies could hardly wait to venture at the amusement park. Some of the 5-6 year olds even explored on their own, without being feared of getting lost, because the indoor park is designed in such a way that one would have to go through any of the dining rooms: the sporty Gymnasium, the retro-50 Diner, the Drive-in room and the quiet Family room and the buffet tables, before exiting. In other words, they are in good hands. One 82-year old married daughter of Yee ancestry was so touched by the occasion that she paid for her own and her son¡¦s membership on the spot.

This summer gathering is different from our traditional annual spring banquet in that the former is casual, cordial and more relaxed, whereas the latter is formal, dressed-up and speech-laden, and procedural. The former provides ample time for members to visit one another, while the latter restricts participants to round-the-table nine-course meal, with hardly time for cross-visitation. It is under this former relaxed atmosphere that I had time to visit many members on a one-to-one basis and to solicit their valuable input. They now seem to appreciate more what Yee Fung Toy Association had done and what it can do. More importantly, they begin to realize the importance of our outreach objective¡Xrecruitment of younger generation to uphold the tradition and foresights of our forefathers. Finally, the summer get-together is free to all. The spring banquet has always been restricted by budgetary constraints.

Vancouver YFT 2007 Summer Picnic

picnicYFT01

This year the Vancouver YFT Society Annual Summer Picnic was held at the Trout Lake Park on July 22nd (Sunday) at noon.

The weather forecast for that day was 50% to 90% chance of rain, and rain had fallen heavily in the early morning.

It stopped raining by daybreak so our picnic was not rained out, as we were led to believe by the weather forecast. Some members might have been discouraged from attending after they heard the news.

picnicYFT03

The turnout was reduced slightly. We apologized sincerely to the Tse's (as we might not have contacted them in time this year) and the Mah Directors (lunch meeting schedule clash), nevertheless, sixteen of our Mah's cousins came and joined us for the picnic. We have over hundred people participated in this year¡¦s event.

picnicYFT05

The Vancouver YFT members, their families, Yee Fung Toy Alumni, the YFT Seniors Group, relatives and the Mah cousins spent an enjoyable afternoon together, chatting, enjoying their delicious lunch, waiting eagerly to see if their tickets are drawn for the prizes.

This year we did not have any games for the kids. Our YFT board is considering suggestions for changes or improvements for next year, hopefully a new format will be will be decided by the next family outing.

We would like to thank Steven Yee and George Yee for organizing this annual event once more. A great job well done!

Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association Annual Picnic

August 19th was the day of the Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association¡¦s 2007 Annual Picnic at Woodland Park. The day started out with steady rain that continued into the time of the picnic at noon. However, the spirit for those who participated was not lower a bit. Over a hundred members attended the picnic. Volunteers set up the food line under the shelter at the picnic site. Upward of sixty young members attended and many volunteered to set up, serve the food and cleanup after the picnic. Members donated nice gifts and cash awards for the drawing. Association advisor Uncle Hing Yu donated a whole roast pig while others donated bakery treats and desserts.

2007 Scholarship Recepients

Four members from the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver came to join the picnic. Their consistent support and encouragement every year is much appreciated.

Prize Draws

A total of 31 scholarships were awarded at the picnic this year. It was very encouraging to see so many young Yees show interest in applying for these scholarships. They are the future of our association.

Presentation to Uncle Jim

At the Seattle Yee Fung Toy Association annual picnic on August 19, 2007, Elder Jim Yee was presented a plaque for his decades of devoted service to the Association.

This year, the association presented an award (gold plaque) to Uncle Jim Yee for his decades of volunteering service to the Seattle chapter and the Seattle Chinese community. Now in his 80s, Uncle Jim continues to attend the annual picnic and other Seattle Yee functions.

Prize draws at the Picnic

The day ended with about 30 members attended an appreciation dinner at the New Kowloon Restaurant in Chinatown. The Vancouver chapter visitors attended the dinner and said farewell for another great visit to Seattle.

New York YFT Association 2007 Scholarship Awards

Elliot Yee, big scholarship winner

Allie Yee, big scholarship winner

Allie Yee, big scholarship winner

On August 19, 2007, the New York Yee Fong Toy Association Scholarship Award Ceremony was held at the Consolidated Chinese Benevolent Association¡¦s auditorium at 62 Mott St. Unfortunately our guest speaker, 5th Precinct C.O. Deputy Inspector Gin Yee, could not attend due to an unforeseen situation that required his presence. We were honored to have our special cousin, Ms. Lai Sun Yee, join us from Albany. However, due to a scheduling conflict, Lai Sun had to leave early to return to Albany. On July 25, 2007, Governor Eliot Spitzer announced that Lai Sun Yee would serve as Assistant Secretary for Homeland Security. On behalf of the family association, please accept our congratulations on your newly appointed position. Lai Sun had previously served as Assistant Deputy Secretary for Criminal Justice.

This year, over $10,000 was distributed among the 89 scholarship recipients. The Moo-Kai Education and Welfare fund, funded by YFT SF Headquarters and established in 1958, along with our family association help fund these scholarship awards. We had 20 elementary school, 18 junior high school, 23 high school and 13 college/university students with a minimum of 30 credits that qualified with a B+ or better overall average for the 2006-2007 school year. There were 6 college/university students with a 3.5 overall average and 30 credits that qualified for awards from our special U.S.-Five Tong Associations Scholarship Program. This program was established in 1996 through the efforts of the U.S.-Five Tong Associations Liaison Committee. Appropriation set aside from the Hong Kong Five Tongs provided these funds. This year, we recognized Allie Yee, Elliot Yee and Stanley Yee for top honors, each receiving scholarship awards from Five Tong Association, and the Grand Elder Dit Nam Yee and Patrick Yee memorial scholarship funds. For this honor, the top 4 high school seniors with a B+ or better average and a SAT score of over 1700 would qualify. As a final category, there were 6 students who received awards just for attending Chinese school.

Before we began the award ceremony, our "enthusiasm is contagious" slide show presentation was shown to the audience highlighting our family association¡¦s 2007 events. The hope was to convey the message: involvement is the key to our family association¡¦s future. Also included was a short tribute to our memorial scholarship fund contributors. The ceremony began with our Women¡¦s League President Kennie introducing our award presenters: Grand Elder Peter Yee, Grand Advisor John B. Yee, Advisor Andy Yu, President Kenneth, Vice President Gong Sum Yee, Legal Counsel Ms. Suk Wah Mah, Honorary General Counsel Ms. Lai Sun Yee, our special cousins from the Mah and Tse Associations.

Kenneth addressed the audience with a message based on the Chinese saying "When you drink water, you should think about its origin"¡]¶¼¤ô«ä·½¡^. He wanted to remind our youngsters to thank their parents for their support and encouragement. When they grow up and become leaders, they should remember their parents and to do good for their community. He encouraged more people to join the activities of our youth league and women¡¦s league. Kennie then echoed the need for more involvement. She hoped more scholarship recipients would participate next year in the traditional ceremonies at our family association¡¦s hall. President Kenneth also announced that the family of the late Advisor Ming Lai donated $800.00 towards a scholarship fund.

Kennie addressing audience

This year, Kennie introduced a new portion of our program highlighting student talents. Lina Fan performed with a portrait drawing, while Teresa Wu and Kyle Yee performed some musical pieces on the piano. These students were not only smart academically, but gifted with talent. Their parents should be proud. Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients and their parents for a job well done and continued success. Thanks again to Kennie, her Women¡¦s League and all those that made this event a success. But there are many behind the scene that we often forget to thank. Please take the time to thank them. I especially want to thank those in the scholarship committee for staying late with me to get everything done.
