Welcome to the 64th issue
of the Yee Fung Toy Global Village Voice, an electronic
newsletter for the World Yee community. In this issue we
are featuring Summer activities from the Yee family
associations around the world. Since March or April of this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many Yee Family Associations events around the world to be postponed or cancelled. The year
2020 has been a year unlike any other, a year with so
many challenges and hardships around the world. Amid a
prolonged pandemic crisis, no one can predict with any
certainty the economic, political and cultural changes
this crisis will have on Canada and the rest of the
world, we know these changes will be significant. The high
level of collaboration among governments, businesses and
civil society managing this pandemic should give
Canadians confidence about our collective ability to
deal with the long-lasting changes it will bring. At this
time, we do not know of a safe and effective vaccine,
nor do we know if a safe and effective drug will work to
eliminate the Covid-19 infection once it has occurred.
In the absence of these, our best bet is based on
prevention. Everyone
should wash his/her hands often, avoid close contact
with people who are sick, cover his/her mouth and nose
with a mask when around others. The World Health
Organization Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) advice for
the public web site provides some useful information,
please click here. Many countries around the world are now experiencing different measures in an attempt to enforce social distancing to slow the spread of Covid-19. They range from ending mass gatherings, closing public spaces like leisure centers, pubs and clubs to closing schools and in some places a total lockdown with people forced to stay indoors. We thank all those who have made contributions to this issue, including:
Martin Yee, Vancouver Hong Kong Yue Clansmen Visit ChaoZhouEight members of the Hong Kong Yue Clansmen Association visited ChaoZhou from July 14th to July 16th, 2017, to discuss application plans with the ChaoZhou Yees regarding the ancient tomb of Yee Shuying for one of the Chaozhou City Cultural Heritage Protection Units. While they were at the ChaoZhou city, they visited: ¼é¦{·s¶m§E¤ó©v¯¨¡B¦W½å§E¤ó®a¼q¡B·¨¼¼Ó¡BÄÇ¥´°¥»°ó¤Î¹C覧¼é¦{¥«¤º¼sÀÙ¥j«°¡B ´ð¤l¾ô¡B¶}¤¸¦x¡BÁú¤å¤½¯¨µ¥µÛ¦W´ºÂI¡C On April

YFT Society of Vancouver Virtual Scholarship CeremonyTraditionally, YFT Society of Vancouver will hold the student scholarship awarding ceremony during the Spring banquet every year. Due to COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the banquet was postponed indefinitely and eventually cancelled. So as not to withhold the scholarship fund and certification to the well deserved scholarship recipients, YFT Vancouver scholarship committee organized their 1st ever "virtual" scholarship awarding ceremony. This was done through a Skype conference call on July 11, 2020 (Saturday) @ 11:00am. This year, a total of 17 recipients were awarded with merit scholarships ranging from elementary level to post-secondary level. An overwhelming attendance was recorded as 16 students managed to attend, together with their parents and YFT committee members. The ceremony went well, as we managed to cover a brief introduction of YFT society and a short history down the memory lane. Before getting to the actual awarding ceremony (naming of recipients), all students are given the chance to self introduce to each other. After the awarding ceremony, YFT scholarship committee shared with the students and parents how they can pick up their scholarship certificates and awards. There was a lot of back and forth communications and cheers! Lastly, I would like to thank the YFT scholarship committee members and other YFT board members for their dedication and hard work for preparing the award and certification at the society hall. Without their help, this 1st virtual scholarship award ceremony would not have been possible. Great job!

Grand Elder Dr. Herbert Yee Receives National Recognition for Volunteer ServiceDr. Herbert Yee, a retired Sacramento dentist, on July 25 received the President¡¦s Volunteer Service Award. This award, which was founded by the President¡¦s Council on Service and Civic Participation in 2003, is a civil award bestowed by the president of the United States. It recognizes individuals whose service has made a positive impact on communities throughout the nation, and those who inspire others to take action. Yee, 95, was presented the award during a ceremony held before a small, socially distanced group of mostly members of his family. The event was held in the backyard of his South Land Park home. David Yee,
who presented the award, described his grandfather
as a ¡§fitting recipient of this prestigious award.¡¨

Detroit YFT Family Association Virtual Summer Picnic & Scholarship AwardsI am Allan Yee, President of the Detroit Yee Fung Toy Family Association and like all the other U. S. chapters; we share the same challenges of the ongoing pandemic. Due to COVID-19 virus, and related underlying health concerns, our chapter had to cancel our 2020 Spring Banquet, but we decided we could still continue our monthly meetings via Zoom Meetings technology. At one of our monthly Zoom meetings; and in spite of a statewide closure due to the coronavirus pandemic; we as a leadership team decided to still have our annual ¡§Summer Picnic and Scholarship Awards¡¨ event. And to achieve this goal, the picnic would be a "virtual event" instead of our traditional picnic. After weeks of planning, we held our very first ¡§Virtual Picnic¡¨ on Sunday; August 16, 2020. Our program consisted of a brief history of the Detroit Yee Fung Toy Chapter, the 2019-2020 chapter officers, recognition of all participants, a video montage of previous spring banquets and summer picnics, a formal presentation of scholarships, and finally a ¡§virtual tour¡¨ of our chapter web site. During our formal presentation of the 2020 DYFTFA scholarships, each student was asked to tell everyone their name, the educational institution they attended, and the current level they had attained. We awarded a total of 49 scholarships to students from ten (10) states nationwide consisting of: Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Georgia, New York, California, Texas, Washington, and as far as Hawaii. Since this was a picnic, in addition to the Yee Fung Toy Scholarship awards, each participant was sent a food voucher/gift card. We had over 100 participants from the Detroit Yee Fung Toy Chapter get online that day via Zoom to attend this first of a kind event. Although the current coronavirus pandemic has drastically affected all our lives, we believe strongly that academic achievement is a pillar of the Yee Fung Toy Family Association, so we are proud to be the first chapter in the United States to use this technology to continue to honor our young scholars in 2020.
