YFT 2014 Spring Get Together Dinner
The Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and the Yee
Fung Toy Society of Vancouver co-hosted a
get-together Dinner for the officers and spouses
before the arrival of the traditional Chinese
Spring Festival.
This year the get-together dinner was held at
the King's Chinese Cuisine Restaurant on Main
Street, on Wednesday, January 15.
The food served by the King's Chinese Cuisine
Restaurant was excellent, and their price are
reasonable too. That's why we kept coming back
for more each year.
This year we have 3 members from the YFT youth
group joining us. Jaime Yee, Vanessa Yu, and
Andrew Wong. Martin Yee |

Conference of the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver Scholarship Class of 2013
On Sunday, January 19th, we held our annual
Scholarship Conference for the class of 2013.
This year, we were particularly fortunate to be
in the company of our deserving students and
their families but also a handful of board
members and volunteers from various other
benevolent associations in Chinatown.
We started with a round of self-introductions
and welcomed first-time applicant, Jeffrey Yu,
to the event. Other students in attendance were
Carina Yee, Amanda Yee, Cameron Yee, Maurice Yu,
and myself. Also joining us was Carla Yee
(Joseph Yee Memorial Scholarship Fund sponsor),
David Yee (YFT Scholarship Committee Chair),
George Yee (Vice-Chair of the YFT Society of
Vancouver), Esther Yue (YFT Youth Committee),
Edmund Ma (Mah Athletics), Dana Mah (Vice
President of the Mah Society of Canada), June
and Doris Chow (HPBA Board Members), Helen and
Lily Lee (Lee Society Board Members), Leander
Szeto (President of the Seto Clans Association),
and Orville Lim (President of the Lim Sai Hor
(Kow Mock) Benevolent Association).
We then tuned in for a great presentation given
by Claudia Li and Kevin Huang from Shark Truth
and the
Hua Foundation. Claudia and Kevin were
engaging presenters who spoke passionately about
their interest in the synthesis of cultural
heritage and social change. Many of their
initiatives stem from a concern for ecosystem
sustainability and food security.
Shark Truth was a program established to
advocate for shark conservation and educate the
public about the cruel practice of shark-fining
in the preparation of shark fin soup. Following
their presentation, Claudia and Kevin spoke
about their unconventional career paths leading
to their involvement with their current work.
They encouraged the students to be open-minded
and willing to engage in new experiences as a
way to discover gratifying opportunities they
may never have considered before.
Following the guest presentation, Carina and I
read a selection from our essay submissions
entered in YFT¡¦s first-time essay contest. Jim
then concluded with a discussion regarding
updates on award applications.
Thanks to everyone who was able to attend and
see you at the upcoming YFT Spring Banquet! And
special thanks to James Yu, for taking these
memorable photos! Jaime Yee - YFT of Vancouver Youth Committee |

Tse Clansman Association of Vancouver Celebrating 39th AnniversaryMembers of the Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver were invited by their Tse cousins to join them for their celebration of their 39th Anniversary and the Women's Committee 21st Anniversary on Saturday, April 26th, 2014.
The noon ancestor ceremony was held at the Tse
Clansman Association of Vancouver Hall. The
evening banquet was held at the Fraser Court
Seafood Restaurant.
Here is an excerpt from Jim's speech:
Congratulations on
Á¤ó©v¿Ë·|¼y¯¬¦¨¥ß²Ä¤Ê¤E¶g¦~º[°ü¤k³¡¤G¤Q¤@¶g¦~¦~¬ö©ÀÁpÅw. Best
wishes for another 39 years, and many more.
Thirty nine years ago or even 21 year ago, we
were the youth generation learning from our
elders; today we are the elders looking for a
new generation to take over.
Succession is a problem common to all
associations, and it is a more difficult problem
than in the past. We have a generation of
Canadian born Chinese who do not know enough
about their association to appreciate its value.
The associations have to do more to recruit them
as members and as future leaders. When we
celebrate anniversaries like today, we have a
gathering of associations who maintain special
relations such as the Chew Lun Association in
Canada and the US , and the Yee, Mah, and Tse
associations. We have an opportunity to exchange ideas on what we can do on our own as well as together to solve this problem. I look forward to sharing ideas with you.

PRC 65th Anniversary Celebration GalaDavid, Esther, Kai Hong and I attended. Esther took photos of us and of the program. After listening to the featured speakers listed on the program, we also heard from Federal Minister Alice Wong, Mayor Robertson, and MLA Jenny Kwan. Most of the speakers point out the increasing trade between China and Canada as a good thing. It is not for them and more for the media to discuss the actualities and implications.
This seems to the year when CBA puts out a new
cast for this (and likely future similar
events). While President James Chu is away in
Beijing at the Oct 1 celebration, VP Jun Ing
delivered the Opening Address. Kenneth Liu, a
new and younger board member, took Jun's role as
male MC. The Acknowledgements were delivered by
Yifu Su, the new Vice Secretary General. I
found an interesting article
in Georgia Straight on this topic.

The Shaoquan Delegation Visited YFT
The City of Shaoguan delegation visit to
Vancouver is a direct result of the formation of
the World Yee Family Association. At the first
World Yee Family Convention in Hong Kong in
2000, we traveled to Shaoguan to visit the birth
place of our ancestor Yee Jing, most of us for
the first time. At the 5th World Yee Family
Convention in Vancouver in 2012, we invited the
City of Shaoguan to send delegates (they were
unable to attend due to visa issues). When they
were planning an official visit to their sister
city San Francisco in October 2014, they asked
if we would host a side visit to Vancouver. We
gladly sent out an official invitation to help
with their visa application.
It was the first visit to North America for the
Vice Mayor, Ms. Lan Yin and her 5 fellow
delegates, Ms. Deng Caihong, Vice secretary,
Shaoguan people¡¦s government; Mr. Zhang Caiming,
Director, the Office of Science and Technology
of Shaoguan Municipality; Mr. Wen Qingnian,
Director, the Tourist Administration of Shaoguan
Municipality; Mr. He Xingyuan, Deputy
researcher, Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs
Bureau of Shaoguan Municipality; and Ms. Li
Huilan, Translator¡A Foreign and Overseas Chinese
Affairs Bureau of Shaoguan Municipality. They
had no idea of the existence of family
associations. They might have easily visited the
Yee Fung Toy in San Francisco had they been
alerted to the opportunity.
We welcomed them to our Association Hall in
Vancouver at 11:00 on October 17. After
presenting us with gifts from Shaoguan, they
told us more about their city and we told them
more about the Yee Fung Toy family association
and Chinatown in Vancouver. The Vancouver
chapter hosted a light buffet lunch. After lunch
we walked the few blocks through Chinatown to
the Mah Society of Vancouver. Our Mah cousins
hosted a meeting with refreshments and much
exchange of information. We left the Mah Society
and walked to the Chinese Benevolent Association
of Vancouver and met with the board members
waiting there for a chat over tea.
The dinner hosted by the Yee Fung Toy of Canada
at the Pink Pearl Restaurant was attended by 43
guests included 12 from our Mah cousins.
What we learned from our visitors and dinner
speakers:
1. Shaoguan
is a big tourist city in Guangdong,
rich in tourism
resources. The main scenic spots include: the Danxia
Mountains; Nan Hua
Buddhist Temple;
Shizi Rock of ¡§Maba People¡¨,
Zhuji Old Alley for natives of the
residents in the Pearl River Delta;
Ruyuan Grand Canyon;
Nanling National Forest Park in the
Shikeng Ravine. I remember visiting the Fengcai
Tower in the centre of Shaoguan built in the
Ming Dynasty to commemorate Yee Jing.
2. Compared to Guangzhou, Shaoguan is a small
city at 3 million people located at the north of
Guangdong province. With its more remote but
picturesque location and slower pace, it is a
more livable city than Guangzhou and most other
cities in China. It still has a choice to
maintain its attractions as a livable city
rather than pursue heavy industrial development
that leads to pollution and environmental
degradation.
3. Shaoguan should pursue opportunities to set
up a sister city in BC that has similar
development goals and culture.
4. Planning for the World Yee Family Convention
in 2015 should include a trip to Shaoguan as
well as a trip to Guangzhou to celebrate the
30th anniversary of the pairing of Vancouver and
Guangzhou as sister cities.
The Shaoquan delegation will visit some scenic
spots the next couple of days in Vancouver
before heading back to Shaoquan, we would like
to thank them for visiting us and wish them all
a pleasant journey home.
