Welcome to the 35th issue of the Yee Fung Toy Global Village Voice, an electronic newsletter for the World Yee community. In this issue we are featuring Spring activities from associations around the world.
According to a recent
research study through a comprehensive analysis by the
China Fuxi Culture Research Association on all the
Chinese surnames, last names or family names, has
released the latest version of the top 100 plus "Family
Names" list.
Twenty-one percent of the
country's population has one of the three surnames,
reported Xinhua citing the study. China is the world's
most populous country in the world with a population
greater than 1.3 billion people.
The current top three "Family Names" are Wang, Li and Zhang. The latest research has revealed that Wang ¡]¤ý¡^ has replaced Li ¡]§õ¡^ to become the largest Chinese surname group, as told in a report released on April 14, 2013.
The association conducted
the statistics for three years since 2008. The research
is based on the database provided by China's Ministry of
Public Security and the identification services of Hong
Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
"It has become the most
complete surname statistics on all China's territories
so far," said Yuan Yida, a researcher at the
association.
I wondered what the
"Family Names" report list would look like if the
statistics of all the overseas Chinese or Chinese living
abroad are included in this analysis.
Here is a YouTube link on
Top 10 most common
Chinese Surnames + Origins/Facts.
An interesting point of
information at this time is that the "Yee" Family name
have now moved up to the 40th spot from the 51st spot
since the 2006 survey.
In China, each family has
a genealogy book with an elaborate family tree that
typically goes back at least several hundreds of years.
(Only male ancestors are listed, however.)
At least five alternative
ways of writing our Chinese Family ¡]§E¡^ name into
English, "Yue", "Yu", "U", "Er" or "Yee".
A probable explanation why
the surname¡]§E¡^is spelled differently is due to the
dialectical pronunciation into English by the parents
when registering their families for immigration or
registering their sons and daughters birth records in
the earlier days.
We thank all those who have made contributions to this issue, including:
Martin Yee, Vancouver
"Gung Hay Fat Choy" from
Detroit, Michigan as we celebrate the Chinese
New Year Eve, "Year of the Snake - 4709".
The Vancouver Chinatown
Revitalization Committee met on March 9, 2013, a
sunny Saturday morning at the scenic Langara
Golf Course Clubhouse to share ideas and
implement priorities for the 2013 Vision
Planning Workshop. Members of the Yee Fung Toy
Society of Vancouver Youth Committee (Jaime Yee,
Vanessa Yu, and Andrew Wong), were happily
invited by Henry Tom, Chair of VCRC, to
participate in discussing a wide range of issues
and opportunities facing Chinatown. Other
supporting members including Esther Yue
(alternate director for YFT of Canada), Judy Lam
Maxwell (VCRC board member, historian, and
educator), and Edmund Ma (Mah's Athletic
Association of Vancouver Martial Arts
Instructor) also attended.
The workshop was facilitated by
Doug Soo, former Dean of Continuing Studies at
Langara College, who led an engaging dialogue
composed of many business and community leaders
and representatives. Doug started by explaining
the process of the workshop. He asked
participants to identify the key issues and
challenges confronting Chinatown, and the role
that VCRC may have in addressing them. The 24
participants pointed out factors such as
establishing a set of common values, directions
for working together, succession plan and board
structure, and a roadmap on specific future
projects over the next 5 years. Henry also
highlighted some of the noteworthy achievements
of VCRC and explained lessons learned from past
experiences. Doug then asked the members to
split into groups of 6 and instructed them to
rank the roles and functions of VCRC by order of
relevance and importance. After a round of
discussion, Andrew gave a brief presentation,
explaining the rationale behind the points of
view of their group.
After a brief working lunch
where participants were asked to brainstorm
ideas on what a revitalized Chinatown might look
like, Edmund presented a list of elements that
would contribute to a brighter and livelier
Chinatown. Other members mentioned safer,
cleaner, and busier streets, a family-oriented
neighborhood with greater integration with
surrounding communities, improved nightlife such
as an expanded night market, and public
amenities such as a Chinatown community centre,
town square, Asian heritage museum, and green
space. Other ideas included introducing a
farmers' market, food carts, buskers, block
parties, and youth/multigenerational activities.
Social projects such as city incentives for
Chinese organization to develop housing for
low-income senior and new immigrants, restored
and rehabilitated heritage buildings, and
increased residential density to support new and
traditional businesses, and attract local
independent business owners who embrace being in
Chinatown (especially a diversity of quality
restaurants) were also highlighted.
The workshop distilled all the
ideas and comments offered throughout the day
and agreed to promote greater involvement by a
broader community, continue and strengthen
VCRC's role as a catalyst in the community and
in relationship to City Hall, and focus on
outreach and advocacy opportunities to strive
for a revitalized Chinatown. Lastly, the members
proposed the following Vision Statement to guide
VCRC actions and promote for formal recognition
at every opportunity:
"VCRC¡K a collaborative voice for
Chinatown Revitalization"
The executive members of YFT of
Vancouver Youth Committee would like to thank
Jim Yee, Chairman of YFT of Vancouver, and Henry
Tom for referring and inviting them to attend
this workshop, injecting new blood to the VCRC
visioning process. It was a highly informative
and productive event, which benefited the youth
committee greatly in terms of improving their
roles and operations in the greater community.

On Thursday, May 2, 2013, San
Francisco Yee Fung Toy Family Association HQ Grand
Elder Henry Yee, Western Grand President Alan Yee, his
wife Edith, San Francisco YFT Headquarter President
Eddie Yee and his wife Carina visited our Detroit
Chapter.
They had just attended the Grand
Opening of the Washington, DC Chapter and they took
some extra time to visit the Cleveland Chapter and our
Detroit chapter.
We had a special meeting of members to
welcome our special visitors, and to worship («ô²½) at
our our altar for our ancestor, Yee Jing. Later we had
a dim sum luncheon at the Golden Harvest Restaurant in
Warren, Michigan.
In the evening we had a special treat
for our esteemed visitors. Our Grand Adviser, Kwok Yee
hosted a special presentation of Chinese Opera Music,
and then we had some good old fashion "Karaoke" with
Henry, Alan, Kwok, and later Betty Wong singing their
favorite Chinese pop songs.
It was a great time had by all; with
delicious food, great entertainment, and fellowship
with our friends/cousins.
