Sunday September 17.
More than 50 members and their
family attended this annual event. Traditional moon

We had our annual Mid-Autumn or
Moon Festival on Sunday, September 24th. Member
families and guests were cordially invited to
participate in this annual event.
At noon after paying homage to
our ancestors, and awarding scholarships and
assistance tuition to the qualified students,
luncheon was served.
Our Mid Autumn Festival dinner
was held at the Hong Kong Islander Restaurant.

Wood Shop Pioneer Hand-Makes
Guitar for Rock-Star Doctor Who Saved His Life (a
Sacramento Yee story)
Duane Calkins revived middle-school
wood shop by teaching students how to make electric
guitars. Earlier this year, after the Roseville
teacher was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Sutter
Roseville Medical Center urologist and cancer
surgeon David Yee, M.D., MPH, used another
high-tech, souped-up instrument to save Calkins¡¦
life.
To say thank you, Calkins hand-made
a special, paisley-imprinted guitar that he
presented Monday, Sept. 25, to Dr. Yee for saving
his life. Dr. Yee brought some of the da Vinci
¡§arms¡¨ to explain to Calkins and students how the
robot assisted him to create a surgical masterpiece
that is minimally invasive and gets patients back to
doing what they love much quicker. That meant that,
in getting to teach his students to make guitars,
Calkins barely missed a beat.
This year's Mid-Autumn Festival was
well attended by our members and their families.
There were plenty of food, games and singing.
The finale of this Festival was a
walk, with lighted lanterns, in a nearby park. The
lanterns shone beautifully in the dark. The children
loved to play with these lanterns, sparklers and
light-sticks.
The Yee Fung Toy Society of Calgary
celebrated the life and times of ancestor Ancestor
Chung-Sheung's (Ä_½Ï) 1017th
Birthday Anniversary on Sunday, October 15th, the
ceremony began at 11:30am. Food offerings included
roast pig, chicken and wine was placed in front of
the ancestor Yee Jing Altar. Thank-you to the
several members that also prepared food for the
luncheon that was held at YFT Calgary building
located at 202B Centre St. S. President Jack Yee
emceed the ceremony.
We all paid our respect to our
ancestor with the offerings and bowed three times.
After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed the delicious
lunch that was prepared for the occasion.
32 members of the The Hong Kong
Yues Clansmen Association went on a three days trip
to Shaoquan, from October 20 to October 22, visiting
the Yu Jing Elementary School, the Shaoguan Yu Jing
Memorial Hall and participating in the Autumn
ancestor veneration ceremony.
There was a big turn up for this
event. This sub-committee did an excellent job
purchasing and organizing all the logistics,
offerings, food and drinks. At 12 noon, the
worshiping ceremony started in the altar room. Our
elders initiated the rituals and all other members
stood in the adjourning hall to witness the
ceremony.
After the ceremony, we had our
buffet lunch and time to mingle with members.
We were looking forward to this day
trip to Desaru. It is a beachfront located in
Malaysia, north-easterly of Singapore - 151km (94
miles) by road or 20km (13 miles) by ferry. All of
us assembled in front of our Association to board a
tour bus at an unearthly hour of 6:30 am.
We cleared both Singapore and
Malaysia Immigration Checkpoints without any fuss.
Along the way to Desaru, we had noodles with
"abalone!" (sniggers) for breakfast. Our hilarious
Malaysian tour-guide was quite entertaining. So we
lost count of the traveling time and soon arrived at
the
Desaru Fruit Farm. This Farm had seen better
times before. Now, it showed signs of ageing. A lady
was doing her sales-pitch merchandising wild honey,
royal jelly, bee pollen, propolis and "tongkat ali"
a native medicinal herb. Her name is Linda Er (§E¡^ and her dad is the farm
owner.
Moving south, our tour coach was
running along the coastline. Desaru was once an
exclusive idyllic holiday beach. Sadly, we saw oil
drilling rigs anchored not too far out from shore.
This place will be set out to be a busy crude oil
production platform.
After lunch at the Makanan Laut Sin
Kong Restaurant, we visited a temple called "·s凤¤s¼q" . There was a lot of
foreign workers crowding around shops and eateries
in this small town. With massive construction works
in progress, the town was hot and dusty. .
Good to be out of this small town
and into busy Johore Bahru where we were let loose
inside Aeon Shopping Mall. We had a decent dinner
before crossing the Tuas bridge back into Singapore
around 9 pm.
On Sunday afternoon, November 19,
2017, the YFT New England celebrated our annual
Thanksgiving luncheon at our Association.
More than 60 members and their
immediate families were in attendance.
