Canada YFT Representatives Attended CSHBA Press Conference

    CSHBA press Conference

A well-attended press conference was held on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the Boardroom at the Chinese Cultural Centre, 50 E. Pender St., Vancouver, to announce the formation of the Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association and their plans for rehabilitating the society owned heritage buildings and revitalizing Chinatown.

The Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association is a non-profit society formed early this year. It is made up of representatives from the societies that own heritage buildings in Chinatown and other members. Some of its goals include assisting and encouraging Chinese societies to renovate their heritage buildings to enrich the cultural heritage of Chinatown and Vancouver and to preserve the history and culture of the Chinese Canadian community; to determine the collective needs and concerns of the society owners, to raise funds to support heritage building conservation and restoration efforts; to solicit support from government, charitable foundations and private corporations and to educate the public on heritage conservation and preservation, etc.

The society owned heritage buildings form an important cultural legacy of Chinatown and Vancouver.

In June 2007, the Vancouver Chinatown Revitalization Committee, with support from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation, held a fundraising dinner and raised over $70,000 for the renovation of the heritage buildings. This money will be donated to the Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association to conduct feasibility studies for the renovation projects.

The YFT Society of Canada building on 226 East Georgia Street, Vancouver is classified as one of these Society owned heritage buildings. The other Society owned Heritage buildings in Chinatown  include the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, Shon Yee Benevolent Association of Canada (May Wah Hotel), Chinese Nationalist League of Canada (Kuomingtang Building), Mah Benevolent Society, Wong's Benevolent Association (2 buildings - Mon Keang Chinese School and Han Shen Building), Yue Shan Society, Cheung Wing Yeong Tong Benevolent Association (Jang Building), Chin Wing Chun Tong Society, Lim Sai Hor (Kow Mock) Benevolent Association and Lung Kung Tin Yee Association.

The YFT Society of Canada Chairman, Mr. Kan Yu and Vice Chairman, Mr. Jim Yee attended this very significant Press Conference.

Jim Yee was really impressed with this Press Conference, he gave special credits to Vancouver City's Social Planner, Mr. George Hui for his preparation of the press release materials, Senior Planner, Ms. Helen Ma for her story boards and Senior Planner, Ms. Jessica Chen for creating just enough interest on the February 14 plan release without giving away any details.

Credits also go to the CSHBA interim chairman and the Mah Society of Canada Chairman, Mr. Fred Mah, Vancouver Chinatown Revitalization Committee Chairman, Mr. Rick Lam, the Mah Benevolent Society of Vancouver Chairman, Mr. William Mah, and the YFT Society of Canada Chairman, Mr. Kan Yu for their continous efforts to promote this worthwhile CSHBA project.

Hopefully the revitalization initiative and the vision of the CSHBA for Vancouver Chinatown will soon become a reality. These heritage buildings and their society owners will benefit in the long run if the owners will participate and follow the CSHBA's blueprint. Afterall, the restoration of their buildings will eventually help to restore Vancouver Chinatown's vibrancy.

Chinatown should be a place where people can learn about its history and at the same time, see it as a part of our modern day cityscape!

With the revitalization of Chinatown's streetscape, it will definitely attract more younger people and more tourists from all over the world to come to our Chinatown.

With the 2010 Winter Olympics just around the corner, let's get these heritage buildings revitalization projects underway so we can showcase our revitalized Vancouver Chinatown to the world!

YFT Society of Canada Representatives Attended "Building A Cultural Legacy Fund" Press Conference

YFT Society of Canada Chairman Kan Yu and Vice-Chairman Jim Yee attended the Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association (CSHBA) press conference on Friday, July 11, 2008 in the Boardroom of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver (50 E. Pender Street). Where the CSHBA announced the creation of the "Building A Cultural Legacy Fund".

The Fund will be created by the Association from the proceeds raised from the Building A Cultural Legacy Fundraising Event held in June 2007 by the Vancouver Chinatown Revitalization Committee and the Vancouver Heritage Foundation.

The purpose of this Fund is to help society owners of Chinatown based Heritage Buildings conduct "Feasibility Studies" for their building revitalization projects. The rules and regulations for application to the Fund will be announced. The Fund will complement City of Vancouver's Chinatown Society Buildings Planning Grant Program approved by City Council in February 2008. The Grant Program is a funding partnership in which the applicant society contributes a minimum of $20,000 for a maximum $100,000 matching grant from the City.

Since Council approval, YFT Society of Canada (226 East Georgia Street) , Mah Society of Canada (137-139 East Pender Street) , Lim Sai Hor (Kow Mock) Benevolent Association (525-531 Carall Street) , Shon Yee Benevolent Association of Canada (254 East Pender Street) and Chinese Nationalist League of Canada (525 Gore Avenue) have submitted applications for the Grant Program. Allocation of the grants will be decided by City Council. City staff will be present to provide an update on the Grant Program implementation.

The Building A Cultural Legacy Fund is created from the fundraising proceeds to help offset Feasibility Study costs incurred by societies. The volunteer based CSHBA, who will manage the Legacy Fund management and will ensure fair and equitable distribution of funds.

Incorporated as a non-profit society in May 2008, the Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association is a volunteer run organization representing the societies that own Heritage Buildings focused on revitalizing the physical cultural legacy of the Chinatown community.

    Building a Cultural Legacy Cheque
                    Presentation

Let us not forget the centre piece of the press conference, the $75,601 "cheque". Thanks to Dana Mah and William Ma (despite being jet-lagged form returning from Montreal just a day earlier) for designing and creating it. And Rick Lam's MC research for introducing each speaker should not go unnoticed. This personal touch certainly added colour to the proceedings, something that I am sure the audience appreciated.

The press conference was a direct result of what happened at Council Chambers on Thursday afternoon, when the Standing Committee of Council on Planning and Environment unanimously passed the report for Phase 1 Grants Approval. We all realize what a huge milestone this is for the Chinatown Societies. Personally, a sense of empowerment hit me as I listened to Tanis Knowles delivering her well written report, Fred adding a few well chosen remarks as a registered speaker, and the Councilors each voicing their supportive comments and friendly questions.

Kan Yu and I relayed the good news to the Yee Fung Toy Society at a Board meeting on July 12th. I told my fellow Directors that whereas most non-Chinese Councilors did not know what a Chinatown Society was before this Grant Program, they do now (especially with the gound breaking work that Jessica Chen, George Hui, Helen Ma and Fred Mah have done over the years) . I told them that both City Council and staff have the long term well being of the Societies in mind as evidenced by the ongoing incentives, grants and support, and it is up to us to put our heart into facing the challeges and realizing some common goals. I will take this same message to the 15th Canadian Yee National Convention in Edmonton next month.

Both the YFT Society of Canada delegates and the YFT Society of Vancouver delegates attended the 15th National Convention held at Edmonton recently. Here are some memorable photos of the YFT Society of Canada delegates and their spouses taken at the opening ceremony on August 7th, 2008.

Chairman Mr. Kan Yu and spouse Advisor Dick Yee and Spouse

Members of the YFT Society of Canada and the YFT Society of Vancouver express their appreciation to all the hard working members of the YFT Society of Edmonton,  we would like to thank everyone here for their great and warm hospitality, especially Chairman Frank Yee, Vice-Chairs Ying Hua Yu, Ken Yu, Kwai Wa Yee, Tin Tao Yee and Convention tour guides Tony Yee and Ken Yu.

John Yee, past president of the Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Education Association (ECBEA), suggested the idea of creating a strategic alliance between the Yee Fung Toy Society (YFT) and a community group such as parents advocating bilingual Chinese education in the public school system in Vancouver. As the Edmonton's Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual program (http://www.ecbea.org/) has been phenomenally successful.

We would like to thank our Mah cousins in Edmonton, they invited all of us to a banquet at the Miramar  Restaurant on August 6th and lunch at the Century Palace Restaurant on August 11th.  We visited their Society Hall on August 7th.

Special thanks to our photographers Jerome Yu, Christina Yu and two other members of their group.

Also thanks to our bus driver Barry! He was friendly and courteous.

Convention Delegates met behind closed doors for three days at the Edmonton Sutton Place Hotel Conference Room, seven proposals were presented. One of these proposals was later withdrawn by the presenter, the rest of the proposals were passed unanimously after a call for discussion and a motion to accept or reject them.

Vice-Chair Wayne Yee and Spouse Vice-Chair Gary Yee and Spouse
Secretary Wing Yee and spouse Treasurer James Yu

The most important proposal presented at the convention by the YFT Society of Canada delegates - to conduct a $20,000 "Feasibility Studies" of the Society Headquarter Building was passed unanimously.

The 15th National Convention was a very fruitful event that provided an memorable experience for all those attended. We all look forward seeing everyone at the 2012 YFT Society of Canada 16th National Convention to be held in Vancouver.

Toasting to everyone at the closing

Overall, we have a very good convention, everyone seemed to have a good time. Delegates work very hard before, during and after the convention to make it a success. For a Chinese report of the Convention, please view the Edmonton Chapter's report.

Providing a Helping Hand to the Parents of Drowned SFU Student Huichun Yu

On Saturday morning (September 6, 2008) I went with Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada Chairman Kan Yu and Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver Board Director Martin Yee to the Vancouver International Airport to meet three strangers from China. It all started three weeks ago, on a hot Saturday afternoon (August 16). According to mainstream media reports:

    Manning Park, British Columbia

"Police say a 29-year-old Chinese exchange student was on a hiking trip in Manning Park with six or seven fellow students when he decided to cool off on Saturday at about 2 p.m.

Searchers found his body about 20 minutes later.

Bystanders performed CPR for about 90 minutes on the third-year science student but he could not be revived. He was airlifted to the Royal Columbian Hospital where he was pronounced dead hours later."

There were no names or other details in the initial reports. The student was Huichun Yu. He was from Jiangxi Province and on his third year at SFU completing his PhD degree in Chemistry. His fellow students started a fundraising campaign to enable his parents to travel to Canada for his final arrangements, and got the attention of the Chinese media, which published his name in Chinese. When we found out his surname was Yu, he was no longer just an unfortunate exchange student from China who drowned. He was one of us. His family must need help badly. We held an impromptu meeting of interested Board and Committee members on September 2, and raised close to $1,000. We had made contact earlier with PRC Overseas Chinese Affairs Office's Vice-Consul Mr. Li Yuliang, and now we also contacted the student that Vice-Consul Li gave us a contact for. We were told Huichuns' family will be arriving on September 4. Later Vice-Consul Li confirmed the family was due to arrive on September 6 at 11 AM.

We came with an envelope containing 1,000 Canadian dollars, which Vice-Consul Li suggested would be most useful for the family who has never traveled outside of China. We were the first ones at the airport. Later Vice-Consul Li, two students, and Shirley Leung, Director of Community Development and Liaison from SUCCESS and her husband joined us. Vice-Consul held up a sign with Huichun's name. The three of them (father, mother, and mother's brother) came out at 11:30, each carrying only a small bag and no checked in luggage. Once we introduced ourselves, Mrs. Yu cannot stop crying, grief spilling out of her as she tried to tell us more about her son. Huichun was a brilliant student. He was due to complete his degree and had invited his family to attend his graduation. His parents never dreamed they would travel to Canada to attend his funeral. Earlier Shirley had told us the family is from rural areas and had to borrow heavily to send their son to university, with the expectation Huichun would graduate and pay back the debts. They had no money to travel, and their trip to Vancouver was made possible by a donation of 180,000 Asian Airmiles from a former SUCCESS Board member (plus over $2,000 in taxes paid by SUCCESS itself). A trust fund has been set up by the SFU students to help raise money for the Family of Huichun Yu. The students¡¦ campaign has raised $7,000 so far, and they will also look after their board and lodging.

We presented the $1,000 to Mr. Yu, and promised we will be raising more money that we will give them before they leave Canada. Kitty Mar (Kitty's Beauty Studio) also sent a cheque for $1,000 that Vice-Consul Li presented. Of course no amount of money will bring back their son, but we hope that they will not burdened with financial worries on top of their unspeakable grief.

On Sunday, September 7th, Shirley Leung of SUCCESS accompanied the family on a visit to the accident site in Manning Park, at their request.

In the mean time, our Tse and Mah cousins have also been fundraising on their own to help Huichun Yu's family after this tragic accident. Many thanks to our cousins for their generous support!

    Cousin Mahs present donations to
                    Huichun YU's parents

September 8th, Monday, our Tse and Mah cousins presented their donations to Huichun Yu's family at their Society Hall.

September 10th, Wednesday, Shirley Leung of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. told me there will be a press conference at the SUCCESS Board Room 314, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Social Service Centre, at 10:30am on Thursday, September 11th. The SFU student friends and the family of Huichun Yu will be present to announce their funeral service plans (Friday 10:00 at Glenhaven) and they will thank the donors for their generous support.

The key message at the press conference from the Yee Fung Toy Society is that Huichun Yu is a member of our extended Yee (Yu, or Yue) Family, and we appeal to our members in Vancouver to donate to the Huichun's parents who have arrived from China. Huichun's parents have poured all their resources including selling their home and borrowing heavily, to support their son's education in China and in Canada, with the expectation that Huichun would graduate and help to repay all debts as well as support his parents in their retirement years. We hope that our small donations will help not only with the immediate expenses while Huichun's family is in Canada, but will also help them with paying off debts and make their life a little easier upon their return to China.

"Without the generous donation from Care Society, Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and the Chinese community, we won't be able to bid our last farewell to our son", said Huichun Yu's parents. The YU family appreciated the Chinese media and community for their great support.

After the reporters left the room we presented $3000 to the parents.

September 12th, Friday, funeral service was held at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel on 1835 E Hastings St.

    http://www.mingpaovan.com/htm/News/20080913/vas2.htm

After the funeral service at Glenhaven (handled entirely by the SFU students) and attended by Lawrence Der (President of Tse Clansman Association of Vancouver), Gary, Kan, Kai Hong and me and cremation at the Vancouver Crematorium, we went to the Flower Garden Restaurant for a late lunch (Shirley invited only the family, friends, and the YFT - Kan, Kai Hong, and me, about 18 in total).

September 14th, Sunday, family members of Huichun Yu, two SFU students, SUCCESS's Shirley Leung and her husband, visited us at the Society Hall around 2pm.

Kan Yu showed our guests some
                    historical pictures.

We had a friendly chat together. We all stood for a three minutes of silence before the meeting, paying respect to Huichun. Chairman Kan Yu gave a wonderful speech, comforting the parents. The parents was very grateful, bowed and thanked everyone. Later, we presented the Huichun Yu parents with more donations collected from our fundraising, after a photo session, we all had some pastries and tea together.

We learned from the parents that they will be heading home on Wednesday, September 17th. We wished them all the best and have a safe journey home!

    The Dynamic Chairman's 60th Birthday

    Happy Birthday! Chairman Jim Yee

A lot of people were surprised when they learn that Jim has turned 60. He looks like he is in his 40s. It has a lot to do with his discipline in living with a healthy life. Jim has a set schedule on a daily basis to perform his mental and physical activities. He would spend no least than half an hour in swimming to strengthen his heart and lung functions as well as to tone his muscles in shape. On a weekly basis, he studies Chi Kung with Sifu Lawrence Der¡u¦t©z®ð¥\¾Ç·|¡v. Chi kung¡u®ð¥\¡vis a form exercise of breathing with your mind and meditates with your soul to ensure harmony with the universe. I have witnessed Jim performed fire walking with his beloved wife Betty through the burnt ashes partly in red with a smile. This couple is willing to go anywhere as long as they go hand in hand.

On September 16th 2008, we are invited to celebrate Jim's 60th birthday at the Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant. Among his families, relatives and friends are the board of directors of the YFT Society. We also have our former chairman, Judge Bill Yee and his wife Carol attended the dinner. Jim's son-in-law Shimer Chau and Jim's cousin Peter Loo were co-emcees for the evening.

Emcees Shimer Chau and Peter Loo

Jim shared with us a very unique bottle of Chinese spirit which is a gift from our Chinese teacher who is now living in Edmonton. Jim dressed in a Chinese suit and with a glass of wine in his hand when he came to our table. We found out that Judge Bill Yee and Jim were schoolmates in high school as well as in UBC. It has been almost 35 years after their graduations from the university. Jim is now the current chairman of the YFT Society of Vancouver. He has a mission to blend the old traditional way of communication with the new high tech Informational Technology together. This is how the YFT quarterly magazine e-version online was found.

I am mostly touched when I learnt that Jim and Betty have decided to donate a monetary gift in the amount of $1,800.00 Canadian to help Huichun Yu's family. They have shown their generosity and kindness to the people who are in a desperate situation. As a member and director of the YFT Association, I'm very proud that our leaders have broken through the traditional way of caring only for its members. We have now gone beyond our boundary and reached out to the community with our love.

Jim has retired from his computer science career recently. He is now enjoying his relaxing family life with his wife Betty. They enjoy going on vacations, traveling around the world with friends every year. Their daughters have also grown up, graduated from university and have their own families.

I wish Jim and Betty a happy and meaningful retirement. Sixty is only a milestone of your life and a new and lengthy journey has just unfolded in front of you.
