Message from the Editor

Welcome to the WYC4 issue of the Yee Fung Toy Youth Forum, an electronic newsletter devoted to youth matters in the World Yee community, and discussions on youth programs and youth activities from associations of the Yee Fung Toy around the world.

It had been quite a while since we publish the Youth Forum, the previous Issue WYC3 was published on 2007/04/06. In this Issue we feature Timothy Yu of the Washington DC Thunder Volleyball team.

This Issue also feature Hong Kong¡¦s Yu Chui Yee, Yu Chui Yee could not have imagined she would make history on her Paralympic debut at Athens 2004 and go on to become one her country¡¦s most decorated Paralympians. She is one of Hong Kong¡¦s biggest Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games fencing medal hopeful this year, unfortunately, she could not beat the reigning champion Rong Jing of the Peoples Republic of China ¡V this time in the women¡¦s individual foil category A quarter-final.

We thank those who contributed articles on youth activities and scholarship awards in the YFT Newsletters. They served as inspiration for this webpage, which is hereby respectfully dedicated to them. A big round of applause to:

We look forward to your feedback!

Martin Yee

Timothy Yu of the Washington DC Thunder Volleyball Team

My name is Timothy Yu of Washington DC Thunder. Washington DC Thunder started as one team under the Washington DC Yee Fung Toy Chapter in 2015. We have grown into a volleyball club who plays every summer in the league circuit, North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament (NACIVT). Most are familiar with 6-Man volleyball, but in this league, we play Chinese 9-Man volleyball. Being a Yu/Yee, the sponsorship with the Washington DC YFT chapter means a lot. In 2014, I, with a couple of close friends, decided to break away from the club we had grew up playing with.

Looking for sponsorship, I knew that the Washington DC YFT Chapter was the best decision because of family ties. My late father, Alan Yu, said that the DC chapter would love a volleyball team of their own in the NACIVT. With the help of my father and Kai Yee (also of Washington DC YFT) we were able to build a team. Since then, we have grown to two teams and a Chinese Lion Dance team!

Growing up being around both 6-Man and 9-Man volleyball, I knew how different the two sports could be. Though both being volleyball, 9-Man is traditionally played outdoors on concrete/asphalt. The heart, grit, and passion put into 9-Man is what keeps me going each year. Every year there is a tournament mid-summer in July in New York called the New York Mini where teams from the East Coast get together and play.

The New York YFT chapter has been coming to watch, support, and take pictures each and every year we have played! We are always grateful of Frank Yee, Jackie Yu and the rest of the NY YFT for their hospitality when we go to New York for that weekend yearly. I have personally been playing in the NACIVT since 2006 and have been more passionate about the game each and every year, but it¡¦s the legacy you uphold for the family association name is what we play for.

Stepping into a leadership role is never easy, but I could not have done any of this without my close friends who also helped build this program as well as the entire backing of the Washington DC YFT chapter. Our club could not have done this without the help of our elders in our association so for that, we are eternally grateful. Our vision and goal of this volleyball club is to be the best in the area, spreading the Yee Fung Toy name. We hope by 2023 to have three men¡¦s teams and two women¡¦s teams.

Timothy Yu

Yu Chui Yee §E»A©É | Wheelchair Fencing Star on Trans World Sport

Trans World Sport traveled to Hong Kong to find out more about inspirational wheelchair fencer Yu Chui Yee.

Alison Yu Chui Yee is a wheelchair fencer from Hong Kong. When she was 11 years old, she suffered from bone cancer, leading to the amputation of her left leg.

It was a wonderful experience for me this year in Pisa World Cup, not just because of the result, but also seeing the growth and breakthrough of my #teammates . Special thanks to U.S. Pisascherma arranging training for us prior the competition. It was so great to train at your club ❤️. Gracie Pisa!
