Congratulations to President Gong Sum and the 2008 team. This year our hall was quickly filled with flowers and congratulatory well wishes. It was encouraging to see that our Yee family association has been gaining so much support and recognition from the Chinatown community and leadership. We were honored to have CCBA President Eric Ng, Hoy Sun Ning Yung Association President Alex Wong, Lin Sing Association President Justin Yu, Chinese Free Mason¡¦s VP Kin Sang Lee as well as our cousins from the Mah and Tse Associations attending this occasion. Also joining us was 5th Precinct Commander, Deputy Inspector Gin Yee. We began the celebration at 1p.m. with the traditional opening ceremonies. It was followed by the installation ceremony and photo op. President Gong continued by welcoming all the attendees and thanking everyone for their support. Next, sharing the same vision and sentiment was co-President Kenneth. CCBA President Eric Ng then led the list of congratulatory speakers. Grand Elder Peter then echoed the thought that although some things stay the same, the future is what¡¦s ahead of us. Advisor Andy finalized the speaking portion with a recap of this year¡¦s accomplishments and business at hand. He extended the association¡¦s gratitude to all those who contributed their time and efforts. After a brief photo session, everyone enjoyed the buffet luncheon and opportunity to chat with one another. As each year goes by, we find that change is slowly happening. Our hope is that our future, with more membership involvement, brings more vision and inspiration. Ultimately, this will lead to new growth for our family association. However, we should not lose sight of the past and overstep those who we respect to accomplish this goal. We are family, and together we will continue to be strong. My hope for 2008 is that our Yee family association will be a more dynamic place to be. Wishing them all a happy Chinese New Year of the Rat. On January 27th, the YFT Family Association of Chicago was visited by the PRC Consul General and his delegates. This visit marked the first time in the history of the YFT Family Association in Chicago by any PRC official. Consul-General Huang Ping gave a new year greeting speech, gave the Association a red envelope (lucky New Year money) and wish everyone a prosperous New Year. Tong Yuen Day in New York YFTOften times, the celebration of Chinese New Year last for weeks and is observed with various traditions. It is one of the most festive times of the year and is a chance for families to spend time together. With the 15th day of the first lunar month quickly approaching, our Women¡¦s League decided to mark February 17th with an activity that young, old, men and women can participate in. This activity, traditionally associated with Lantern Festival, is the making of Tong Yuen. These ¡§round balls in soup¡¨ are made from glutinous rice and used to symbolize wholeness, completeness and unity. It was refreshing to have another tradition, not normally observed by our Yee family, being conducted. The day started around 9:30 AM with a few members of the Women¡¦s League group preparing the essentials. We want to give special thanks to Wai Kew ¡]°¶²y¡^ and his wife to their valuable help in getting things started. Then, the enthusiasm became contagious as more and more came to participate. I was amazed to see how fast the group was making the tong yuen and how much preparation was needed by so many people. It was truly a sight to see as all united to make this a successful and joyous event. In keeping with tradition, a customary ceremony was conducted followed by a few words from Presidents Gong ¡]¿û²`¡^, Kenneth ¡]´º·s¡^ and Women¡¦s League President Kennie ¡]ÀA®\¡^. Everyone enjoyed a bowl of Tong Yuen along with the roast pork that Elaine ¡]¬L¬ü¡^ made. Afterwards, ¡§Nian Gao¡¨, a traditional New Year¡¦s cake was offered to all, courtesy of Chinese Secretary Jin Qing ¡]ª÷²M). She spent a great deal of time the day before making these trays of Nian Gao and gathering all the ingredients for the Tong Yuen. It was a tremendous task. We would be remiss not to acknowledge Jin Qing for all her efforts to make this event happen. Finally, we all want to thank Kennie, her women¡¦s group and all those who participated to make this a memorable and successful event. For more photos, please click here. Frank Yee, New York
NY YFT Visited Gouverneur Nursing HomeOn Tuesday, February 19, 2008, New York Yee Fong Toy Family Association went to Gouverneur ¡]°ª¶³¥§¡^ Healthcare Services¡¦ senior center to wish the seniors a happy Chinese New Year. We gathered at our association at 12:00 noon to prepare the small packages for 210 seniors. With the help of our valuable member Yok Ngor ¡]¥É®Z¡^, we boarded a mini bus (courtesy of Shung On Mini Bus Company) with boxes of presents and a group of us from the association, which included our two presidents Gong Sum ¡]¿û²`¡^ and Kenneth ¡]´º·s¡^, our Women¡¦s League President Kennie ¡]ÀA®\¡^, John ¡]¤å¥¿¡^ from our Youth League, and our Women¡¦s League members Yok Ngor, Jin Qing ¡]ª÷²M¡^, May Eng ¡]¬ü®R¡^, Yok Jan ¡]¥É¬Ã¡^, Sally ¡]¨qÄR¡^ and Elaine ¡]¬L¬ü¡^. We arrived at Gouverneur at exactly 2:30 p.m. and were immediately greeted by Eugene ¡]ª¢¥¿¡^ and Jannie ¡]¼zs¡^ Yee. Eugene and Jannie, a married couple, are our Contact Persons at Gouverneur¡¦s nursing home facility. They have many years of working experience at Gouverneur and are very well respected in our Asian communities. They are also board members of our association. Our first stop was to the Temple on the 13th floor, where the seniors would gather for meditation. Our presidents Gong Sum, Kenneth and Kennie addressed them by wishing them a Happy New Year. Kennie even spoke in both languages, Cantonese and Mandarin. They were well received by the seniors. I was very touched to see the dedication and devotion the staff has for their patients. While some of the patients are alert and of sound mind, some are in dire need. I also felt very blessed to have my health. Yok Ngor was so moved that she donated $200 to Gouverneur¡¦s nursing home facility right on the spot. With the help of Eugene and Jannie, we were able to wheel the boxes of presents through five floors smoothly with no incidents. We also like to thank John for his help in maneuvering all these boxes to facilitate us to get the job done smoothly. At the end of the day, we all felt a sense of self-satisfaction for doing a good deed. It reminded me of the book ¡§A Life God Rewards¡¨ by Bruce Wilkinson. A small group of us decided to stop in a convenient store to get a lottery ticket. No, we didn¡¦t win the lotto that night. Perhaps that is not the kind of reward God intended for us. Like planting seeds, some will grow and some will go unnoticed. Elaine Yee ¡]¬L¬ü¡^, New York
